When it first appeared in 1986, the Desert Equations album was greeted with enthusiasm, awe and disbelief. This dizzying, inspired blend of Persian tradition, New York avant-garde, and electronic music remains incomparable, powerful and mesmerising to this day.

Combining the sublime voice of Iranian vocalist Sussan Deyhim and the electronic wizardry of US composer Richard Horowitz, the album blends multiple influences, including Persian music, New York's early ‘80s avant-garde scene, jazz, electronics, and Moroccan folk music.

This haunting and futuristic album inspired filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to entrust Richard Horowitz with the soundtrack for the film adaptation of Paul Bowles’ novel The Sheltering Sky.
